Our Goal

Our laboratory aims at developing comprehensive and automated metabolite identification kits which feature economic, quantitative, accurate and robust metabolomic analysis. To address the heterogeneity issue of metabolites, we apply a ‘divide-and-conquer’ strategy and developed reagent kits and standards libraries based on high-performance chemical isotope labeling (CIL) LC-MS for the profiling of chemical-group-based submetabolomes such as amine/phenol submetabolome, acid submetabolome, etc.

Our laboratory also develops mass spectrometry based tools for proteomics. These tools are used for shotgun proteomic analysis, quantitative proteomics, characterization of protein modifications, etc.

Our laboratory is interested in applying metabolomics and proteomics for biological studies and disease biomarker discovery research.

Our laboratory is part of The Metabolomics Innovation Centre (TMIC) and the analytical tools developed in our laboratory complement to a number of NMR and MS tools available at TMIC.

Dr. Liang Li

Dr. Li obtained his B.Sc. degree in Chemistry from Zhejiang (Hangzhou) University, China, in 1983, and his Ph.D. degree in Chemistry from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA, in 1989, under the direction of Professor David M. Lubman. After graduation, he joined the Department of Chemistry at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta in July 1989. He has been a Full Professor since July 1999 and also an Adjunct Professor of Biochemistry Department, Faculty of Medicine since January 2008. He served as Director, Alberta Cancer Board Proteomics Resource Lab from February 2000 to December 2005. He serves as Chair, Analytical Chemistry Division of Chemistry Department since July 2007.
Dr. Li is a Canada Research Chair in Analytical Chemistry (Tier 1, 2005-2012; renewed for 2012-2019) and has won several awards including McBryde Medal (2001) from the Canadian Society for Chemistry, the Rutherford Memorial Medal in Chemistry from the Royal Society of Canada (2003) and the Maxxam Award from the Canadian Society for Chemistry in 2009. Dr. Li has published more than 200 research papers mainly in the area of analytical mass spectrometry.
